The church of St Mary the Virgin at Grittleton is perhaps one of the less documented churches in Wiltshire. Sitting on the main road through Grittleton, opposite the impressive structure of Grittleton House it is comfortably close to the local pub. A church has been in Grittleton since at least 1269, the area was associated with Glastonbury Abbey during the late Anglo-Saxon period.
The structure consists of a nave (dating from towards the end of the 14'th century) and side aisles with a later tower. The South Aisle and porch was built in 1805, with the Chancel being rebuilt at the same time.
Internally the structure is fairly low roofed with a warm atmosphere, aided by some fine stained glass. The church is usually open for visitors and sits in a well tended graveyard, Photographed for theChurchPhotographer by Nick Temple-Fry.
