St Mary the Virgin church at Lower Seagry is located up a narrow winding lane to the South of this small village. A picturesque location adjacent to the Manor farm (which itself boasts an impressive gated entrance), with views across open pasture. The fact that around here runs the M4 impacts not at all on the tranquillity of the location. This is unspoilt Wiltshire displaying one of its many characters.
The site of a church since at least the 12'th century, the current structure dates from 1849 and follows (at least externally) the form of the original church. Some internal fittings from the old structure were retained including the 15'th century rood screen, 12'th century font and two 13'th century stone effigies. The result is a pleasant light structure well suited to its location and retaining a sense of continuity with its past.
The churchyard is large and level with mature trees, providing many framed views of the church. It is well kept and managed for conservation.
A friendly structure that repays the visitor, this church is normally open.
