Huish – from the old English for the “measure of land needed to support a family”. A small hamlet under the hills that define Pewsey vale. This settlement may well have roots in Romano- British history and represent a carry over from that periods household based farm.
The church sits between manor farm (to the north) and the few houses that nowadays constitute Huish to the south. On a levelled area of the sloping hill side the church commands an enviable location with good views over the surrounding land.
It's likely that a church has existed here since at least the 13'th century, originally larger than the current building and having a spire (which was demolished in 1688). It's clear that the church was never rich and was frequently in considerable disrepair. The current structure dates from the 1780's and was substantially restored in 1879 when it was again approaching dereliction.
A simple structure with a peaceful atmosphere, well complemented by the light falling from the leaded windows.
This church is usually open.
