A charming country church serving the community of Ashton Keynes. Ashton from the 'farm where the Ash grows' and Keynes probably a corruption of the name of local 'lord' in the 13'th century. The village is now in the area of the Cotswold Water Park, a mix of developments and conservation areas utilising old aggregate pits.
The church of the Holy Cross dates from the 12'th century but has had substantial alteration over the years. The current form of the church is approximately that assumed in the 14'th century with the building of the tower, and the raising of the nave walls/roof to their current hight. The 'wagon' roof itself dates largely from the 15'th century.
The Victorian restoration added the vaulted ceiling and decoration in the chancel and widened the chancel arch.
There is a substantial and well kept graveyard.
A very pleasant church to visit, especially in early spring which shows the graveyard to best advantage. The church is normally open to visitors.
