Ampney St Mary, a small Gloucestershire Cotswold church, just a few miles from Cirencester. Now isolated from the village of the same name this church was once at the centre of its settlement, however following devastation during the Black Death the rebuilt village is over a mile away.
The Church structure dates from the 12-14'th century and features the clearly visible remains of medieval wall paintings. A very simple structure complete with characteristic sloping walls it well repays a visit with its sense of welcome.
Sit on the pews just a couple of rows from the front and keep very still with your eyes on the entrance to the chancel, with luck you'll see one of the church mice running across the gap. This is a simple home, but far, I think, from fabled poverty .
